What is Piles (Haemorrhoids / बवासीर / मस्से)

• Piles are the swelling of the blood vessels near the anal opening.
• An increased pressure on these blood vessels due to any reason, causes them to enlarge and swell, thus forming lumps which are occasionally felt at the anal opening.

Piles Causes

• Constipation or Straining during bowel movement
• Hard stools
• Pregnancy and childbirth
• Lifting heavy weights

Piles Symptoms

• Painless bleeding while passing stools
• Feeling a lump outside the anus
• Itching around the anus
• If a blood clot forms in the haemorrhoid (Thrombosed haemorrhoid) it leads to a severely painful swelling which worsens with bowel movement and sitting.

Piles Diagnosis

• Detailed medical history followed by visual examination of the anus is usually enough
• Digital Rectal examination
• Proctoscopy (a scope is inserted to examine the anal canal) is done to confirm the diagnosis.

Grades / Stages of Piles

• Grade 1- Painless bleeding, itching with no Pile mass coming out
• Grade 2- Pile mass protrude out during bowel movement and retract back upon completion of bowel movement
• Grade 3- Pile mass does not retract by itself but needs to be manually pushed inside after the bowel movement
• Grade 4- Pile mass remains out from the anus all the time

Treatment of Piles
